Great question the french drain name is actually based off the inventor, Henry French, who first wrote about them in 1859. A Massachusetts resident and first president of what would be UMass Amherst!
A french drain takes water into the pipe and with gravity moves it while a drainage trench allows water to diffuse out of the pipe along the length into the soil. A basin temporarily stores water and diffuses it into the surrounding soil.
Gravel creates a transition zone between the pipe and soil to allow water to move in whichever direction desired. In the case of a french drain it gives space for the water to collect before entering the pipe and creates a barrier preventing soil from clogging the pipe.
